How to know what your skin really needs

Ein Mann, der lächelnd vor dem Spiegel steht, um seine Haut genauer zu beobachten

Perhaps you recognize this: In winter, your skin suddenly feels tight. In summer, it gets oily faster. After a stressful week, it looks tired; after a vacation, it's relaxed and fresh. Many of us then wonder: Do I need new products now? The answer is often: Not necessarily.

Because often it's not your skin type that has changed, but your skin's current needs. That's precisely why it's worth not categorizing your skin rigidly, but rather paying attention to its signals.

Skin Types at a Glance

Fundamentally, five skin types are distinguished: normal, dry, oily, sensitive, and combination skin. However, these are not fixed categories, as they change depending on the season, lifestyle, or hormonal fluctuations.

From Analysis to the Right Skincare Routine

Skin Type or Skin Condition - What's the Difference?

Skin type describes characteristics that usually persist for a longer time.
Skin condition, however, changes constantly. It is influenced by, among other things:
  • Seasons
  • UV radiation
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Nutrition
  • Hormonal changes
  • Humidity
  • Your current skincare routine

Therefore, even normal skin can temporarily need moisture or react more sensitively.

So the most important question is not: "What is my skin type?"

But: "What does my skin need today?"

Four Signals Your Skin Uses to Talk to You

Our skin sends small hints every day. If we learn to interpret them correctly, skincare becomes much simpler.

Feeling of Tightness

Does your skin feel dry or tight after cleansing? Then it often lacks moisture or its skin barrier is temporarily out of balance. Gentle cleansing, a hyaluronic serum, and a suitable moisturizer can be beneficial now.

Rough Skin Texture

Does your skin appear rough or feel less supple? This often indicates that the skin needs not only water but also nourishing lipids.

Redness or Increased Sensitivity

Does your skin suddenly react more sensitively to products or environmental influences? Then it's worth simplifying your skincare routine. A few well-tolerated ingredients often support the skin better than many active ingredients used simultaneously.

Pro Tip: Lightly draw a cross on your cheek with your fingernail. If the skin immediately turns red, it is sensitive.

Less Glow

Does your skin look tired or dull? This doesn't immediately have to be a sign of aging. Often, sleep, stress, UV exposure, or temporary dehydration play a role. Balanced skin usually looks fresher all by itself.

What Your Skin Almost Always Needs

Despite all individual differences, there are some fundamentals that support almost every skin:
  • Gentle cleansing
  • Sufficient moisture
  • Support for the skin barrier
  • Daily sun protection

This basic foundation rarely changes. What does change is the intensity of the care.

Fewer Products, More Attention

When skin changes, many of us automatically reach for new products. However, often the opposite is true. Observe your skin for a few days first. Ask yourself:

  • Does it feel dry or rather balanced?
  • Is it more sensitive than usual?
  • Has anything changed in my daily life?

Often, a small adjustment to the routine is enough. Not every skin change immediately requires a completely new skincare line.
