Hyaluronic Acid: Why this active ingredient is indispensable in cosmetics

Hardly any ingredient is as well-known in skin care as hyaluronic acid. However, it is often forgotten that hyaluronic acid is not an artificially developed trendy active ingredient; it is a natural component of our body.

Among other things, it is found in the skin, connective tissue, joints, and eyes. In all these places, it performs a similar function: it binds water and helps keep tissues elastic and well-hydrated. It is precisely this property that makes hyaluronic acid so interesting for skin care.

What exactly is hyaluronic acid?

Chemically speaking, hyaluronic acid belongs to the group of polysaccharides, which are long-chain sugar molecules. It consists of repeating building blocks and can therefore bind exceptionally large amounts of water. You can imagine it as a small water reservoir: it doesn't give water to the skin, but helps bind existing moisture and keep it available. Why does hyaluronic acid decrease in the skin with age?

  • less collagen.

High molecular vs. low molecular: the difference

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid

  • remains predominantly on the skin surface,
  • supports moisture supply there,

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid

  • has smaller molecules,
  • can penetrate deeper into the upper layers of the skin,
  • supports moisture binding there.
