Hyaluronic acids are differentiated according to molecular weight

Up to 1,500 kD (kilo Dalton), hyaluronic acid is considered to be of low molecular weight. With a number of 1,500 kD and higher, hyaluronic acid falls into the category of high molecular weight. The name on the ingredient list (INCI) is the same for both molecular sizes: Sodium Hyaluronate.

With high molecular hyaluronic acid, the molecules are too large to absorb into the skin.

They hence stay on the skin’s surface and bind moisture there. The resulting film helps reduce transepidermal water loss, i.e. the amount of moisture that the skin loses naturally through evaporation. In binding moisture on the skin’s surface, high molecular (or long chain) hyaluronic acid makes skin appear plumper and more supple.

High molecular hyaluronic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can be instantly beneficial to the improvement of the complexion.

Long-chain hyaluronic acid is most effective in combination with its low-molecular variant or specific low-molecular extracts.

In products that combine high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, the small molecules absorb into the skin and bind moisture there. The high-molecular-weight molecules form a moisture-binding film on the surface of the skin. This allows for the instant effects of hydration and optical plumping. The same mode of action applies to the combination of low-molecular extracts and high-molecular hyaluronic acid.
