Light summer care – what your skin is longing for now

A nice bronze, a great glow, relaxed facial features – this is how many of us like to think of our skin when we dream about summer. The reality is usually a little different, because long sunbathing in particular leads to light-induced skin aging. Whether sunshine or not: find out below how you can best accompany your skin through the warm season.

The most important thing in sunny weather: sun protection

(Read more about sunscreens, what differences there are and what you should pay attention to here)

Whether light skin or pre-tanned – sun protection is essential. This includes not only creams and lotions but also sunglasses, appropriate clothing and headgear (as our scalp also gets sunburn). In addition to sun creams, there are numerous day creams containing an SPF available in the market. But be careful – in order for them to actually protect your skin, don’t save on the applied amount of the cream.

By the way, makeup can also slightly help against UV rays, because it often contains titanium dioxide. This ingredient is a mineral UV protection and reflects sun rays. The degree to which it does help, however, depends on the respective product. Overall, makeup does not substitute for sunscreen.

In summer, our skin loves moisture

In summer, the skin loses a lot of moisture through heat or sweating. Lotions are a particularly suitable skincare in high temperatures, as they have a higher proportion of water and a lower proportion of oils. The lotions or fluids often feature aloe vera or thermal water. Aloe vera in particular has anti-inflammatory properties that are good for the skin after sunbathing. For extra hydration, a hyaluronic acid serum can be applied under the sun cream. A day cream or other skincare rich in lipids is not recommendable for use under sunscreen, as they might have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the SPF.

After hot days, our skin needs to be cleansed well

Whether cream or lotion, sun protection usually forms a film on our skin. Coupled with warmth and sweating, our pores clog and we get small pimples. It is therefore particularly important to cleanse the skin thoroughly in the morning and in the evening. Mechanical peelings are not recommended, especially for sunburned skin, but gentle enzymatic peelings and detoxifying applications can work wonders.

And for a burst of freshness in between: facial mists

Whether stored in the refrigerator or lying in the shade on the beach: facial mists bring pure refreshment – and, depending on the formulation, additional effects such as intense hydration, powerful antioxidants or a skin-soothing effect. They can often be applied over makeup. A gel mask from the refrigerator is also good for eyes, as eyes tend to swell – but be careful, if it is too cold, the skin can be damaged.

Very important: antioxidants

UV radiation triggers oxidative stress in our body through free radicals. This can damage our skin cells. In some cases, they can no longer renew themselves quickly enough or turn into “sunspots”. Antioxidants, such as those found in various vitamins, act as “free-radical scavengers”. In doing so, they help protect the skin from premature aging. Antioxidants are particularly concentrated in vitamins A, C and E, but also in aloe vera or shea butter.
