How to take care of dry skin

It feels tight, flaky, itchy or reddens – and sometimes it wrinkles. Dry skin can take many forms, but rarely are we particularly pleased with them.

In the following, we will take a closer look at why dry skin occurs, how to recognize our skin needs and alleviate the symptoms of this skin condition.

As we age, our skin becomes drier

This is mainly due to the fact that from age 25 onwards, the hyaluronic acid production decreases by up to 1% every year.

But climatic conditions and harsh cleansing agents can also dry out our skin, as they affect the skin barrier and thus increase transepidermal water loss. The longer this condition persists, or the longer we use the wrong products, the higher the likelihood that we will see our skin dry out.

Dry skin needs moisture and lipids (fats)

In most cases, the barrier function is compromised in dry skin, i.e. hydrating it is not enough anymore, because moisture cannot be stored properly by the skin.

Two things can help:

  • Increase hydration
  • Strengthen the skin barrier

Hyaluronic acid is particularly suitable for providing the skin with lasting moisture, as it binds large amounts of water. With low-molecular hyaluronic acid, this moisture absorbs into the skin to act where it is needed. With regular use, the natural moisture depots of the skin are replenished and skin becomes smoother and more supple.

In order for dry skin to retain moisture, an intact skin barrier is essential. If the skin barrier has been damaged, e.g. by harsh cleansing agents, you can do two things:

Firstly, use a cleanser free from aggressive surfactants and harsh alcohols.

Secondly, find a moisturizer that will help strengthen the skin barrier. Creams are more suitable than lotions for dry skin, as they have a higher content of lipids (i.e. fats). Ideally, these fats should be natural, as natural fats such as olive oil, shea butter, avocado, jojoba or almond oil are more similar to sebum than their synthetic counterparts. As a result, they are better absorbed and processed by the skin, but they also contain important nutrients and unsaturated fatty acids, which strengthen the skin’s barrier.
