Hyaluronic Serum: highly concentrated, clearly formulated, effective

A hyaluronic serum (sometimes also referred to as a hyaluronic acid serum) is a particularly light form of skincare, usually liquid or gel-like in consistency.

Hyaluronic acid is created by dissolving hyaluronic salt (sodium hyaluronate) in water. Unlike a cream, a good facial serum with hyaluronic acid therefore rarely contains oils, emulsifiers, or fillers.

A good serum provides a high dose of active ingredients, absorbs quickly, and feels light on the skin. However, to achieve its best effect, it must be "sealed" with a cream.

The effect of a hyaluronic acid serum is based on a simple property: the molecule can bind many times its own weight in water. In a serum, hyaluronic acid is particularly highly concentrated compared to creams, which is why a good serum has a noticeably more intensive effect than a pure moisturizer. However, a serum generally does not contain nourishing ingredients such as lipids. Therefore, it is important to apply a cream or lotion as a final step after using the hyaluronic serum.

A hyaluronic serum can provide a plumper skin feel, reduced tightness, visibly smoothed fine lines, and a fresher complexion. These effects are often noticeable from the very first application, with increasing benefits from regular use over 4–6 weeks. The strength and longevity of these effects depend heavily on the formulation and the molecular size of the hyaluronic acid used.

"High-dose" refers to the proportion of sodium hyaluronate (the hyaluronate salt) in the formula. You can (often) recognize its concentration by its position in the INCI list: the further toward the beginning, the higher the proportion usually is. However, just as important as the dosage are the quality and the molecular size of the hyaluronic acid used:

Large molecules remain on the surface of the skin, where they form a moisture film and provide an optical smoothing effect. This gives you a lovely immediate result, although it is rather short-lived.
