Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles: what the skin really needs

"Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles" is one of the most sought-after promises in cosmetics – and one of the most frequently misunderstood. This is because the term refers to two completely different things: hyaluronic acid that you apply to the skin and hyaluronic acid that is injected under the skin. They both have the same name, but do different things.

This page explains which wrinkles respond to skincare and which do not, and what a routine looks like that keeps skin resilient for years. We are a manufacturer of hyaluronic cosmetics, not an aesthetic medical practice – and that is exactly why we tell you where skincare reaches its limits.

01 How wrinkles form

Skin aging begins as early as the mid-20s and occurs on several levels simultaneously.

Loss of moisture in the stratum corneum

The skin's own hyaluronic acid content decreases. Less bound water means less volume in the upper layers of the skin. The surface appears dull and fine lines become more pronounced. This is the level on which skincare has the greatest effect.

Declining collagen and elastin structure

In the dermis, the support structure slowly breaks down. The skin loses tone and elasticity. Skincare has an indirect effect here: an intact, well-nourished barrier slows down the process, but does not reverse it.

Facial expressions and volume loss

Recurring movements leave their mark over the years. At the same time, the distribution of fatty tissue in the face changes. This level is not accessible to cosmetics.

External influences

Around 80 percent of all visible signs of aging are caused not by time, but by the sun, environmental stress, smoking, and lack of sleep. That is the good news: the greatest lever lies in everyday life, not in genetics.

02 What hyaluronic acid actually does for the skin

Applied hyaluronic acid binds water in the stratum corneum. This has three measurable effects.

Immediate smoothing. High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is too large to penetrate the skin. Its molecules form a moisture-binding film on the uppermost layer of the stratum corneum. As a result, dehydration lines—the fine lines that become visible in the morning or in dry air—visibly disappear within minutes, and the complexion appears soothed and more even.

Plumping over time. With consistent use of low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid over several weeks to months, the moisture content of the upper skin layers increases permanently. Since hyaluronic acid binds large amounts of water, the skin's moisture reservoirs are replenished. The skin feels intensely hydrated, appears plumper, light reflects more evenly, and the complexion looks fresher.

More stable skin barrier. A well-nourished barrier loses less water and is less susceptible to irritation. This is the true long-term effect and the reason why moisture counts for so much in wrinkle prevention.

03 Hyaluronic acid on the skin or under the skin: the decisive difference

Many search queries regarding hyaluronic acid and wrinkles actually refer to injections. The distinction is simple:

Cosmetics work in the stratum corneum (horny layer). They bind moisture, smooth the surface, and strengthen the barrier. They work daily, are reversible, and require no procedure. And they work over the entire area, not at specific points.

Injections work in the dermis. This involves introducing cross-linked hyaluronic acid as volume. This is a medical procedure, belongs in the hands of a doctor, and is something fundamentally different from skincare.

hyapur® Berlin manufactures cosmetics. If your goal is to fill in a deep frown line, skincare is not the right approach. That requires a medical consultation. If your goal is skin that remains elastic, hydrated, and resilient for longer, however, skincare is the right choice.

04 Which wrinkles respond to skincare (and which do not)

Depending on the location and origin of the wrinkles, hyaluronic acid cosmetics may help. Or they may not:

Dehydration lines

Fine, superficial lines that change depending on how well the skin is hydrated. They react most clearly and quickly, often within days.

The Eye Area

The skin around the eyes is up to five times thinner than on the rest of the face and has hardly any sebaceous glands. This is where a lack of moisture and fatigue show first. At the same time, it is the area that benefits most from targeted care. Learn more on our page about eye care with hyaluronic acid.

Neck and décolleté

Thin skin, little subcutaneous fat tissue, high UV exposure, and simply forgotten in most routines. Those who consistently extend their facial care down to the neck stand to gain the most here.

Cheeks and cheek contour

The area where moisture loss is most visibly widespread. Plumping skincare primarily improves the overall appearance here: glow, evenness, light reflection.

Where care reaches its limits

Deep expression lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows, as well as wrinkles caused by loss of volume, do not change in structure through cosmetics. Well-cared-for skin makes them appear less harsh, but nothing more. Anything else would be a promise we cannot keep.

05 Healthy Aging instead of Anti-Aging

"Anti-aging" treats skin aging as an adversary. We believe this is the wrong perspective, and one that can lead to frantic product switching and overloaded routines.

Healthy aging means supporting the skin at every stage of life so that it remains healthy, balanced, and resilient. Fewer ingredients, less irritation potential, but consistent. An intact skin barrier is the best protection against premature aging, significantly more effective than any individual trendy active ingredient.

In practical terms, this means: moisture as a base, lipids for sealing, antioxidants against environmental stress, and UV protection as a must. In that order.

06 The anti-wrinkle routine

Mornings

Gentle cleansing, facial toner on still-damp skin, hyaluronic acid serum, eye cream, and finally day cream to seal it in or, on very hot and sunny days, a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 directly.

In the evenings

Cleanser, serum, night cream. At night, water loss through the skin is at its highest and cell regeneration is most active – this is where a richer texture pays off.

Once or twice a week

A moisturizing mask as an intensive boost, especially during the heating season and after sun exposure.

The three rules that make the difference

First: always apply to slightly damp skin, never to completely dry skin – otherwise, hyaluronic acid will draw moisture up from the deeper layers.

Second: work upwards from the neck.

Third: be patient. Visible changes in elasticity and skin texture take four to eight weeks, depending on the age and condition of your skin.
